Creative/Reflection Assignment -15% Due: Week 4 Oct 7th, by 11:59pm, Via Slate drop box Project Summary Individually, you will select a youth featured in a documentary from the list on these assignment guidelines. The main learning objective is for you to apply some foundational knowledge from the course to the life experience of a youth. Using the documentary as an entry point, you will explore the ways the social service work professional might “help” this individual. Later, you will hand in your prepared written assignment comprised of: 1) Creative application of the three models of engaging with youth. 2) Group meeting notes from your roundtable discussion that can be done virtually. Step 1: Choose a documentary · Invisible City, available on-line from the NFB website. Synopsis: “Invisible City is a moving story of two boys from Regent Park crossing into adulthood – their mothers and mentors rooting for them to succeed; their environment and social pressures tempting them to make poor choices. Turning his camera on the often ignored inner city, Academy-award nominated director Hubert Davis sensitively depicts the disconnection of urban poverty and race from the mainstream.” Possible Clients: Kendell Campbell or Mikey Lewin · Mohawk Girls available from the NFB website, you will need to log-in through Sheridan library. Synopsis: “Like typical teenagers, all three are wrestling with critical decisions about their futures. But for these girls, there is more at stake. The rules on the reserve can be strict and unforgiving. Move away and you risk losing your credibility, or worse, your rights as a Mohawk. Stay and you forego untold experiences and opportunities in the "outside world."” Possible Clients: Amy, Lauren or Felicia · Warrior Boyz available from the NFB website, you will need to log-in through Sheridan Library. Synopsis: “Director Baljit Sangra's documentary takes an unflinching look at the root causes of gang violence in the South Asian community of Vancouver. To date, more than a hundred young men in the community have died in gang-related violence. Gangs are a reality of urban life, yet behind the body count and the headlines, a far different battle is being waged. Educators and parents are taking action against gang violence, seeking real solutions and fighting for change”. Possible Clients: Tanvir or Vicky · Indictment: The Crimes of Shelly Chartier, available from the CBC website Synopsis “Through the sensitive and intelligent lens of Indigenous directors Lisa Jackson and Shane Belcourt, the sensationalism is swept aside to reveal something much more compelling and complex – the story of a young woman caught in historical circumstances beyond her control and how she struggles to rebuild her life after incarceration. With in-depth access to Shelly, Indictment unpacks the crime and raises important questions about the Canadian justice system”. Possible Clients: Shelly Step 2: individual preparation work ( 15 marks) After you have watched the documentary, the next task for you is to engage creatively in the three models of working with youth. Here, you are applying these different models to the youth in the video and develop three different creative products that relate to the youth and movie you selected. You will apply the client centered social work model to one youth (a client you chose) and the other two models or more meso or macro in nature. Everything should relate particularly to your documentary. Remember to keep this assignment to scale, all you need to is ask yourself the questions in the ‘questions asked’ column and think of a creative way you could represent that you understand the three models. Have fun, take risks, and make sure you demonstrate that you understand the difference between the three models. You will be submitting it to your instructor to grade. Here are some examples: · Create 3 different memes that could be shared on social media · Draw a mind map showing how the 3 models connect to the documentary · Create an infograph showing how the 3 models connect to the documentary · Create a poster for a rally for the social justice model, a poster for psycho educational group for the client centered model and a townhall invitation for the community development model · 3 different comic strips See rubric to understand how you are being marked. If you are unsure about an idea, ask your instructor. Remember this is worth 7.5 of your final mark. The main thing you are being marked on is your application of those three models. You choose how you want to demonstrate that understanding. Your creative piece needs to be somewhat self-explaning – there shouldn’t be a great deal of words. Please make sure you label each model for clarity. Step 3: Roundtable Team meeting & meeting minutes (15 marks) Check course outline for the date of the roundtable. The only thing you are doing is answering these questions in a small group and handing in your summary notes. The expectation is that everyone in your group participates actively. Please make sure everyone has the opportunity to discuss. 1. Assign roles. In the very least your group should have: · A recorder to write the notes from your meeting. This person is responsible for recording a summary of the conversation related to each question and handing the results of the discussion to your instructor. · A vibe-watcher who is responsible for ensuring everyone feels valued, engaged and has the opportunity to speak. · A time keeper to be mindful of the time and instruct the group on when to move on to the next item. Feel free to add any other role you think would be helpful in your group. 2. After you’ve introduced yourselves (if needed) and assigned roles, please go through these discussion/reflection items. Agenda: a) Everyone in the group should share their creative engagement piece with their group. How did you come up with the idea? How hard was it coming up with an idea? b) What tensions exists between the three models? What model do you think would be most effective in contributing to a more just world for youth? What model do you think is more dominant in social service work? Why? c) How prepared do you personally feel in working with the client group like the ones presented in the documentary? What makes you feel prepared to work with this group? What work could you do to prepare you more for this work? d) What model are you most interested in engaging with? Why? What appeals to you about the model? e) What model is the most controversial? Why?
