CRANIAL NERVE X
The term cranium refers to the skull, particularly the area where the brain encompasses. The nerves which originate from the brain to do a set of motor or sensory functions are called cranial nerves. They end up into the body parts to carry out signals to the desired location. There are twelve such nerves and the history behind their finding is quite interesting. Cranial nerves finding dates back to the second century AD and keeps evolving yet, with a watermark in the mid twentieth century. The first classification was done by the German anatomist, Samuel Sommerring. This was further studied by other contemporary and later period’s scientists and now they look like how we know them at present. Firstly, the function of a particular cranial name was identified, then they are classified into either being sensory or motor and then segregated under the 2 broad divisions. Then every nerve was assigned a roman numeral in the order of their position from front to back on the brain. Apart from numbering them into 12, they have different names too, most of them being in Latin or Greek, because they were first studied through the link language, Latin.
