Sources Assignment (15%) What: You are asked to write a 3-page argumentative essay in answer to the question “Do the ancient sources used for the study of Roman society present an accurate picture of the Romans, their culture, and their society?” The essay should be double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman (or similar) font. It must include: 1) A thesis and coherent argument 2) A bibliography 3) References (Chicago style preferred, http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html, 4 references per page is a good target) References for modern sources must include the page number where the words or idea was found (e.g., “Introduction,” in Themes in Roman Society and Culture: An Introduction to Ancient Rome, ed. Matt Gibbs, Milorad Nikolic, Pauline Ripat (Don Mills: Oxford, 2014), xxv.). References for ancient sources must include book, chapter and verse number (e.g., Vergil, Aeneid 4.12; CIL XV 7194; RIB 7; Apuleius Metamorphoses 9, Livy, preface). These must appear in the body of the text but do not need to appear in the bibliography. How: Please read the suggested reading, from the class textbooks and on Nexus (Introduction from Themes in Roman Society; and Introduction and Section 1, Class Sourcebook), and the class PowerPoints from the first two weeks of class You are required to consider the advantages and disadvantages of the different forms of ancient evidence—ancient literature, epigraphy (inscriptions), papyri, coinage, and archaeology—and answer the following question: “Do the ancient sources used for the study of Roman society present an accurate picture of the Romans, their culture, and their society?” In effect, the question asks you to consider the nature of the different forms of evidence. Who were the people who created this evidence? Do we know who they were? Do we know when they lived? Are all forms of ancient evidence subject to bias or creators’ motivations, or do they suffer from being one-sided? Do all of these forms provide us with the same information? Basically, you are asked to evaluate these forms of ancient evidence. Note: The PowerPoint should be used to access other sources; you do not need to cite the PowerPoint itself. You are asked to ensure that you cite/refer to the suggested reading, but please note that extra credit will be given for references and bibliography beyond those required. 1
