Providing health education is an essential function used to promote healthier behaviors. It is necessary to be able to develop a lesson plan that not only informs your audience, but also provides opportunities for interactive activities and participant involvement. Review the sample lesson plans provided. Choose a specific health topic and a target audience. Sample health categories include (your topic should be narrowed down from these broad categories): · weight issues · nutrition · physical activity · stress · sexually transmissible infections · safe sex practices · personal safety Sample target populations include: · elementary school students · high school students/teenagers · a specific community (gender, age, sexually orientation…) · a religious community · a group of people diagnosed with the same illness/problem So, a sample for this assignment could be: obesity in elementary school children. This includes 200 million men worldwide and 300 million women worldwide. 2. Obesity is caused by a combination of an increase in high calorie and high fat foods and physical inactivity (WHO, 2014). 3. Being obese is a major risk factor for chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, and certain forms of cancer. 4. Eating a low-fat, nutrient rich diet of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables will help reduce the risk of become obese and may help with weight loss. Let’s do a few a short opening warm-up to get ready for today’s lesson. 1) Which breakfast option would you most likely choose on a regular day? Expanding Prior Knowledge Great input class! From the responses provided in this session, we can all agree that eating a balanced diet and exercising is important for our health. But exactly how important is it? We will take a look at that now. What is Obesity? · Obesity is a condition that is associated with having an excess of body fat · Obesity is classified as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or greater. Who is affected by obesity? Blacks (47.8%) Hispanics (42.5%) Whites (32.6%) Asians (10.8%) Obesity is higher among middle age adults, in comparison to other age groups: Adults from 20 to 39 years (30.3%) Adults from 40 to 59 years (39.5%) Adults age 60 and above (35.49%) Causes of Obesity Food Choices: · Over consumption of foods that are high in calories, fat, and sugar can lead to weight gain. · Perception of fast food being cheap, convenient, and always available….but at what price to your health? Physical Activity: · Lack of regular physical activity can lead to weight gain. · Video Games, time spent on Internet, other social media distracts from Environment/Societal Factors: · Media encouraging fast food as a quick and tasty meal options. · Eating high caloric foods may be the norm in certain communities, family units, and friendship circles. A need to “fit in”. Genetics: · Genetics may affect an individual’s pre-disposition towards becoming obese. · This does not mean that will automatically be obese. Lifestyle choices such as a diet and exercise will ultimately determine an individual’s weight status. Health Conditions Associated with Obesity · Type II Diabetes · Heart Disease · High-Blood Pressure (Hypertension) · Certain types of Cancers Steps to Prevent Obesity & Reduce Overweight Status · Changing eating habits (Incorporating whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats into diet) · Increasing physical activity (CDC recommends 30 minutes of moderate activity at least 5x a week). · Continue to educate yourself about how to nourish your body properly · Engaging in a support group or extra curricular activity (Positive way to modify your environment) · Setting realistic weight management goals Application & Final Reflection Now let’s do some group work. I will split everyone into 5 groups of five people. In your groups you will create an action plan of five things you will commit to in order to improving your health in the next 30 days. All group members will sign the pledge, and we will contact you in 30 days to follow up with you and how you are doing with your chosen goals. (Allow 15-25 minutes for groups to create an action plan) Each group will now choose a speaker and share their five steps they have committed to in the next 30 days. Big Idea/Generalization
1. Diabetes affects approximately 422 million individuals globally, and diabetes causes 1.5 million deaths every year.
2. Obesity increases the level of hormones, glycerol, proinflammatory substances, cytokines, and other substances associated with the formation of insulin resistance (World Health Organization, 2019).
3. Diabetes occurs as a consequence of insulin resistance and impaired cell function.
4. Males are more likely than females to develop diabetes at a reduced weight. One reason for this is that males store excess fat in their abdomens, which is a recognised risk factor.
5. Controlling total carb intake and selecting carbs that are fiber-rich are better alternative approaches for diabetes prevention and weight loss (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.).
