Introduction
This essay focuses on the concept of privilege of dominant groups over subordinate groups in society. There are various clusters of groups and subgroups, which prevail in a society. In Australia, USA and some of the European countries the dominant colour of skin of the people is white. The minority of the people are brown or black skinned. Therefore, there is a dominance of whites and the subordinate group is constituted of darker skinned people. Thus, the dominance is established by virtue of numbers. The dominant group always has an unfair advantage over the subordinate group. The essay proposes to study some such privileges and the power, which it bestows on the dominant groups.
Dominant Groups
The concept of race dominance has been the subject of a lot of debate throughout history. The diversity and intercultural mingling of people of different races, communities, genders and sexuality has been the norm in countries like the United States of America. The dominant groups have constituted to the subjugation of the subordinate groups. The dominant race consists of white people and the subordinate race constitutes the black people. There is a lot of intermingling among white and black people that contributes to a mixed-race community. In addition to these communities, there are other coloured communities like the Asian and Hispanic communities. The Black Lives Matter activism is an example of the emergence of the movement against race discrimination (Dixson, 2018).
The emergence of the movement is an example of dominance owing to race. The analysis of the movement leads to lot of unanswered questions about the lack of facilities in education at the school and college level to cater to students of colour. The youth led activism shaped by the effects of social media has its beginnings in the discrimination faced by black groups’ right from the school level. The failure of urban communities to address the issue of lack of resources for its less privileged individuals has been one of the reasons for the movement (Dixson, 2018).
The issue of dominance over indigenous people has always existed. This has led to their poor development economically and socially. The socio-economic disparities, which exist in the fields of health, education, social, cultural and political arenas, are often a result of this discrimination. Inequalities exist that permit the dominant group to have a larger number of choices compared to the subordinate group. Indigenous people often constitute the poorest in terms of income. The lack of recognition of the indigenous people’s collective land rights, unequal access to public services, geographical isolation, low level of education and many such issues cause fundamental inequalities (Wallis, 2016).
The discrimination against various subordinate groups continues in spite of various efforts to maintain an egalitarian society. The discrimination against immigrants in relatively so-called tolerant societies, the oppressive discrimination of the various dictatorships in the Arab world, the money-dominated elections in the developed democracies are all based on inequalities. The reason for the existence of these inequalities is the basic instinct to control the human race. Human societies have been hunters and gatherers. The instinct to control and dominate stems from the instinct to avoid danger (Sidanius et al., 2017).
The concept of the various types of dominant groups and the effects of their dominance is thus explained using examples of racial dominance and dominance over indigenous groups. The other major area of dominance is the dominance of the male gender in large parts of the world. This led to male dominance in the workplace (Sakellariou & Pollard, 2016). The inequality of women in the workplace has been a topic of discussion for many years and it will be covered in more detail...
