The farmer found that his field of alfalfa had a certain type of fungus on it. The fungus was part of a family of parasitic microbes. The only answer that the farmer had found to fight the feisty fungus was spraying his fields with a toxic chemical that was not certified. It was the only method that offered him any hope of success. Unfortunately, when the farmer began to spray his fields, the federal agent from the FDA was in the area. The federal agent’s opinion of the fungus was that it was not at a stage of significant concern. He offered the farmer a choice: Stop the contamination of the flora of the region or face a fine of substantial amount. The farmer halted the spraying of his alfalfa fields.
