Homework Assignment #1: Chapters 2‐6 (35 pts) Research Scenario A: A teacher kept records of how many students were absent during each month of the school year. A table with her data is below. Use this data to answer questions 1-8:  Month Absences September 12 October 15 November 18 December 22 January 21 February 20 March 22 April 15 May 18 1) What is the mean number of days absent per month? Interpret this number.  2) What is the mode number of days absent per month?  3) What is the median number of days absent per month?  4) The standard deviation for the number of absences is 3.52? Interpret this number.  5) What percentage of the absences occurred in the month of April?   6) What type of graph would work best for this type of data? Why? 7) What month(s) had the most frequent number of absences?    8) What scale of measurement is the data on days absent in? Research Scenario B: A researcher collected data from a group of people 35-55-year-olds to examine the relationship between overall life satisfaction, consumerism and leisure time. Life satisfaction was measured using the Life Satisfaction Inventory (LSI), consumerism was measured by the I Want to Shop Scale (IWSS), and leisure time was measured by the RELAX Scale. A matrix displaying the correlation coefficients for these measures is below, use it to answer questions 9-11. Life Satisfaction (LSI) I Want to Shop (IWSS) RELAX Life Satisfaction -.32 .25 I Want to Shop -.32 -.12 RELAX .25 -.12 9)  What is the Pearson’s r correlation coefficient for the relationship between leisure time and consumerism? Discuss the strength of this correlation coefficient. 10) What is the Pearson’s r correlation coefficient for the relationship between life satisfaction and consumerism? Interpret this score discussing both the direction and the strength. Also, discuss what this means in everyday words. (5 points) 11)  What is the coefficient of determinism for the relationship between life satisfaction and leisure time. Interpret this number.  (4 points) Scenario C: A teacher you know works for a school district that is looking for an assessment instrument to measure reading ability.  They know you are learning about reliability and validity in your statistics class and they have asked you to help them choose the best test. The district has narrowed the selection to two possibilities Test A and Test B. Below is the reliably and validity information provided by the publisher of each test. Test A Test B Reliability Information · Test-retest= .87 · Cronbach’s Alpha=.79 · Test-retest = .70 Validity Information · Test items adequately represent the 5 areas of reading: phonological awareness, letter knowledge, letter-sound correspondence, vocabulary and comprehension · Test items adequately represent the 5 areas of reading: phonological awareness, letter knowledge, letter-sound correspondence, vocabulary and comprehension · Criterion validity shows a moderate correlates with the highly regarded Woodcock Reading Mastery Test · Predictive validity shows that it correlates well with reading scores in grade 3. 12) Which test would you recommend?  Why? Give specifics and be sure and discuss both reliability and validity? (5 points)

Research scenario A:
1) The mean number of days absent per month is 18.11
This means on an average 18 students absent per month.
2) The mode number of days absent per month is 15
3) Median number of days absent per month is 18
4) The standard deviation tells us how much the data is deviated around the mean. Here the standard deviation is 3.52 this means that the number of absence deviated around the mean absence is 3.52.
5) Percentage of absence occurs in the month of April is 9.20
6) Bar graph works best for this type of data because it gives clear view of absence of each month and also it easy to interpret and compare among different months.

7) Months like October and April, November and May, December and March are most frequent number of absences.
8) The scale of measurement of the data on days absent is in numeric.
Research scenario B:
