Abstract-
Organizational culture and corporate social responsibility (CSR) both are very broad in nature and are quite vague and complex too. Here, some business unit changes and implement their values, norms as per the need in this growing organization which sometimes become unmanageable as their core organizational culture doesn’t match with the changed or improved version of culture and sometimes change and improvement in the culture helps organization grow not only in domestic territory but also globally. CSR comes somewhat in between the changes that organization tries to incorporate in their culture i.e. CSR is not a new term but today organization is taking its support either to enter into some other territory where CSR is must, hiding some facts/information or finances from stakeholders or their organizational culture and principle truly believes in it and they do it for the betterment of the society and the activity is not just on papers. Different organizations like government bodies, MNC’s, SME’s, NGO’s etc. are participating heavily but there is no guarantee that the things said is being implemented with same enthusiasm and they are taking care of the given responsibility properly by focusing on the societal sustainability rather than self profitability and sustainability.
Introduction-
A set of belief, norms, attitude, behavior, values that is shared by any or every member of organization constitute organizational culture. For an instance let’s take organizational conflict due to diverse workforce, it is because the organizational culture is not flexible enough to embrace diverse environment or workforce, the people/employees have a set mindset against other culture or diversification and they never open themselves to learn and embrace the change. So, we are clear now that attitude, value, organizational norms are some solid pillars for making a strong culture. Not only the internal environment plays a vital role in making an organizational culture but it’s the external socio-economic, socio-political environment which plays an important role. CSR (Corporate social environment) comes into picture when an organization wants to build a credible image before the target market or the society on whole. Corporate reputation and image before the society, organization scandal and stakeholder’s attention towards changing environment condition push the organization plan and implement some strategies focusing towards the betterment of the society which will attract stakeholders’ attention from negativity towards positivity or contribution of a business unit. Once Milton Friedman said that “The Business of Business is Business” but in today’s competitive environment where it is very clear that no business can sustain without the help and support of the society, it will be easier and will also be way more progressive strategy for an organization to incorporate CSR into their culture so as to run their business on a win-win note. There are many examples lets take TELUS for that matter who have mastered the approach of CSR by linking their CSR effort with the core organizational values of teamwork. Here, we need to understand that CSR is not only about external contribution i.e. any charity towards school, NGO’s or relief fund but it also encompasses various internal CSR activity which has a great impact on the external society or nation at large like a proper handling of suppliers e.g. Starbucks, who take care of their coffee suppliers (farmers directly) by eliminating any and every middleman so that they get fair price for their effort, embracing diversity and removing any type of discrimination from the organizational culture, connecting to products or services which is manufactured by keeping health, prosperity, safety not only of their customer but stakeholders and society. A strong bond of organizational culture with corporate social responsibility will not only be beneficial to the organization by increasing goodwill, word of mouth, market share and better market penetration but will also be for the betterment of people or group associated with the organization.
