Water Pollution: Causes, Consequences and Solutions
ABSTRACT
Water pollution can be regarded as; a quite serious crisis for the entire world
since; because of its adverse impacts it can prove to be life threatening for humans,
flora and fauna.1 In fact, because of modernization of world, quantity of harmful
substances have also been increased which are ultimately dumped in water sources
such as; rivers, sea etc. and thus; can contribute in water pollution2. As, Rivers and
seas are considered as; chief sources of potable water therefore; reduction in their
water quality may lead the living beings towards numerous health complications. This
paper scrutinizes the causes of water pollution, the significance of such pollution, and
tries to find out a potential global solution to this dilemma3.
INTRODUCTION
Approximately 75% of Earth‟s surface is covered by water whereas; rest has
been taken up by land. Because of population explosion, overexploitation of natural
resources has become a common phenomenon for instance; water resources such as;
river, sea etc. are being exploited by us in a regular mode1. Because of such misuse our
precious water resources are being affected adversely not in terms of quantity but also,
in context of quality. Such poorer water quality can also be termed as; water pollution

and according to researchers, it can prove to be harmful for all of the organisms
in several aspects2.
THESIS STATEMENT
Water pollution is destroying the attractiveness of nature, and developing life
threatening diseases in organisms so, we should try to save the water resources via
preventing water pollution3.
WATER POLLUTION: CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES
It‟s often said that water is the basis of life. The reason behind this statement is
that water is essential for several life procedures for instance; nutrition, respiration as
well as elimination. Besides, vital processes, we also use water for a number of
purposes such as; for production, sanitation, agriculture etc. Owing to its extraordinary
properties water is also regarded as a unique chemical1. Out of these amazing
properties; one is that it can renew itself means; it is able to clean itself. In fact, when
any undesirable substance such as; dust enters into water then, after a particular
duration, it can settle down automatically and thus; water again becomes clean3. This
process is known as; sedimentation. Besides; water can also break down the pollutants

or may dilute them up to that particular limit where its concentration could not be termed
harmful at all 2. But, the negative aspects of this mechanism are that it takes
considerable time and cannot remove extreme extent of detrimental contaminants.
Though, human beings are aware about all such facts even they are adding such stuff
in water which is polluting it considerably. For instance; we might observe blue-green
algae blooms in such water sources in which Nitrogenous and Phosphorus compounds
could get introduced because of excessive use of chemical fertilizers in agricultural field
2. In fact, the application of Fertilizers has been increased up to 15 times in comparison
to 1945. In addition to fertilizers, a number of other chemicals are also introduced from
various sources in water 3. Despite the fact that, it‟s not possible to enlist all of them but,
the most unfortunate thing here is that these are being included in to that portion of
water which is considered “potable” means; fit for drinking and is already in quite less
quantity. Owing to the introduction of such harmful chemicals, water gets polluted
because of release of energy and other materials and overall it degrades the Water
quality 3. In fact, water pollution involves all such waste materials which could not be
broken down in a natural mode 2. It can also be said as; anything released into water
that...
