Introduction
The caste-based divisions in Indian society is a matter of in depth consideration and the Indian government is on the verge of facing an inevitable criticism for either retaining or removing the reservation for the lower castes in terms of government employment. Considering the conflicted past of ancient Indian society, people in India are still discriminated based on their castes and in order to eradicate the social malpractice and social imbalance, the reservation is included as a specific measure for giving lower caste people a chance to make their mark in the society, culturally as well as financially. However, the use of reservation is used by lower caste people, despite having the ability to live on similar terms with higher caste people, use the reservation for their advantage and hence raise the need of critical assessment of reservation system in India.
Problem Statement
Background
The reservation system was included in the Indian Constitution as a preventive measure for safeguarding the rights of lower caste people and reduce the degree of caste distinctions, and gradually eradicate the social practice altogether. As mentioned by Pathania and Tierney (2018), higher caste people used to treat lower caste people with disdain and often stripped them of their right to equality, education and social acceptance, leading to financial crisis and social oppression. However, despite becoming a modern society, where even lower caste gets the same chance of pursuing careers are using reservation for their personal advantage, creating problem.
Context
Despite agreeing with the need for reservation in public institutions, Marcesse (2018) argued that in recent times; where people have become tolerant to inter-caste marriages and even a large section of the lower caste people have proper education and high standard of living, leaving only the poor and neglected section deserving reservation. In reality, every lower caste person is using reservation for securing their future, creating caste based recruitment patterns, hampering economic growth, talent management in India. The reservation is making lower caste people financially strong; however, it is still a matter of discussion whether reservation is reducing inequality.
Summary
The current problem exists within the conflicting social values that on hand is promoting the betterment of the lower caste people as a way of reducing inequality in society. Whereas on the other hand the reservation is seemed as a tool for lower caste people to secure employment in public institutions, creating social unrest among general caste poor people, talented candidates who belong to general caste. As stated by Nakajima, Otsuka and Yamano (2018), reservation is hampering the performance of public institutions, appearing as a political, economic, workplace, and financial problem at the same time, making it necessary for immediate assessment.
Necessity
The assessment of whether reservation is actually reducing social inequality in the context of caste based discriminations or creating unfair advantage for lower caste people, hampering the financial performance of public institutions must be necessary. As assessed by Kalita (2018), removing reservation could make the lower caste people vulnerable to higher castes or could be responsible for better talent management, refines financial stability and a society where reservation is provided to poor people only.
