Content:You will be expected to draw on the learning materials covered from Tutorials 1-6.
What is a critique?A critique is a systematic way of objectively reviewing a piece of research to highlight both its strengths and weaknesses, and its applicability to practice. Nursing professionals often need to be able to identify best current practice, and the ability to evaluate and use published research is critical in achieving this. As such, it is a skill required in many position descriptions. When critiquing something it is important to construct a valid judgment about the article and comprehensively explain the basis of the judgment. For example, high-quality peer-reviewed literature can support the judgement made.
Assessment Criteria:The Workbook will be assessed according to the following criteria (please review the rubric for deeper understanding).
- Manage information systems to identify and find relevant peer reviewed literature to explore a health care research question
- Critically appraise health care research literature
- Discuss the relevance to evidence-based practice
The Workbook has two sections:
PART 1In Part 1, you are required to view 2 research video presentations to illustrate how you might go about undertaking a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activity.CPD is a requirement of all registered health practitioners (AHPRA, 2016). The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) states that “CPD is the means by which members of the professions maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities needed throughout their professional lives” (NMBA, 2020, p. 1).Examples of CPD activities include attending “conferences, forums, seminars and symposia” and “self-directed learning” (NMBA, 2020, p. 2). The NMBA describes the CPD requirements in the Registration Standards, and state the number of hours practitioners must spend each year on learning activities (see
