Constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and diverticular disease are all disorders associated with slow colonic motility (movement). Although each is treated with different medications, their treatments all include an increase in dietary fiber or a dietary fiber supplement. Chronic lack of moisture and bulk in the feces makes it more difficult for the intestinal muscles to push waste along. The intestine may develop weak walls, pouches, and/or infection.
