Considerations in Ethical Decision Making
Mr. Huang may have been born overseas and may have immigrated to Australia as an adult and so may prefer to have a translator or a visit from the culturally specific patient support team, if available. Further, he may usually choose to use Asian treatment modalities and remedies and may prefer to discuss available treatment options that consider or include these. It is possible that he may seek treatments such as moxabustion and cupping, which can leave marks that may resemble bruises. ii Further, many Asian societies have traditionally been founded on principles such as filial piety and respect for the elderly, and this may have been Mr. Huang's expectation. However, children raised within a Western society may not adopt the same values and may find it challenging to care and show respect for older family members who expect care as their due. Elder abuse is a possibility and may take many different patterns including verbal abuse or minor neglect, which can be challenging for frail, relatively isolated older individuals who may believe they have nowhere to go and no one to ask for help. So addressing Mr. Huang's injuries and exploring the ‘bruises’ on his back will need care and consideration.
