Consider a review of a ‘routine’ clinical activity such as an interdisciplinary patient care meeting from an unusual perspective to raise awareness of unseen factors that can have a direct effect on the healthcare professional and patient interaction. Ask students to make a list of all kinds of power and authority of those involved in the discussion, i.e., degrees/education level, expertise, gender, seniority, title, control of resources and so on). In light of the list, as part of an individual reflection or small-group discussion, ask students to examine how people are addressed and how they speak to each other in the care meeting. What does this tell you about hierarchies of power within the team and the institution?
