UCD 2.1 Project Description.pages Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology User-Centred Design Task 2.1 User Interface Design Project ILO All Purpose: The major semester assessment item for this unit is the User Interface Design Project. The purpose of the Project is to help you develop an understanding of the User-Centred Design software development life-cycle by developing a solution to a user interface design problem. In this task you will become familiar with this semester’s Design Project consider how we will apply UCD principles to the problem. Individual Task: Write a description of the user interface design problem in your own words and an overview of how we will apply UCD principles to the project. Resources: Lecture Notes: Topic 01 User-Centred Design Handouts: UCD User Interface Design Project, UCD Task Schedule, UCD 1.1 Project Over- view Template.docx Textbook: Chapter 1 of Stone et al and/or Chapter 1 and 2 of Hartson & Pyla To be marked as Complete your submission must have: Part 1: Project Description A description of this semester’s User Interface Design Project (aka the Project). Include: ■ briefly and accurately describes the aim of the Project (i.e., what the software will do for the users) in your own words (i.e. does not plagiarise Handout) ■ correctly identifies the context of use (user group/s, user goals and the software envi- ronment) based on information in the handout Part 2: UCD Principles ■ shows an understanding of the UCD activities to be completed over the semester (i.e., the project tasks) and how the tasks relate to three or more UCD principles Hint: There is a template you can use for this task: UCD Project Overview Template.docx User-Centred Design Overview This semester you will complete a User Interface Design Project. At the end of the project you will have a developed a prototype according to User-Centred Design process and principles. Over the course of the project you will: ■ research and analyse software context of use (users, goals and tasks and environment) ■ demonstrate an understanding of software context of use using a variety of models, ■ research and write software requirements, ■ design a prototype user interface according to software requirements and usability de- sign principles, ■ evaluate user interface designs, ■ follow ethical guidelines for the treatment of human research participants, and ■ develop strategies for working in small groups. The work for this Project will be completed as weekly tasks submitted on line. Some tasks will be submitted as part of a group and some you will submit individually. Your UCD tutor will assist in supervising and guiding your Project as well as providing feed- back on submitted work. In this task you will become familiar with this semester’s Project and consider how we will im- plement UCD principles to complete the Project. Page of 2 3 The User Interface Design Project will be a practice run for your final year project. However, in your final year project you will be working with real clients and developing working software, whereas in this Unit you will be working on a project set by the lecturer and will only need to develop a prototype interface. User-Centred Design Instructions 1. Read the short description of this semester’s project topic (UCD User Interface Design Project.pdf) and answer following questions (note a template for this report is available on Doubtfire as a resource for this task): 2. Aim: What is the purpose of the prototype being developed for this semester’s project? Write a sentence or short paragraph describing the aim of the project and the user inter- face design problem in your own words. 3. Context of Use After reading the UCD User Interface Design Project, answer the following questions about our software’s context of use: 1. Users: Identify at least two different user groups. Give each user group a name. 2. Goals: What will the users be trying to achieve? Include mention of what their current problems are. 3. Environment 1. Physical Environment: Where will users use the final product (physical location)? 2. Technology and Artefacts: What kind of technology or artefacts will they use (consider hardware and software)? 3. Social: Do they interact with other people or organisations while using the soft- ware, if so how? Part 2 4. Application of UCD principles 1. Review the ISO UCD principles and the schedule of activities to be completed for the Project (see project timeline in UCD Task Schedule.xls). Briefly describe how you are going to apply three or more UCD principles (see below) to this project. Page of 3 3 ISO User Centred Design Principles: ■ the design is based upon an explicit understanding of users, tasks and environment ■ users are involved throughout the design and development ■ the design is driven and refined by user-centred evaluation ■ the process is iterative ■ the design address the whole user experience ■ the design team include multidisciplinary skills and perspectives
