Criminal Justice
Choice of offender: Alan Collinson
Crime
Introduction and Summarization of sentence chosen for the virtual offender and reason for
choosing it
Criminal justice and punishment are essential elements of the judiciary. Fear and punishment
are also essential since they are crucial elements that lead to formation of law and order in the
society (Cohen, A, 1977). There are several virtual offenders
and the evaluation of their cases
does provide a lot of insight into the process and method that is employed in case of resolving
and forming the sentence for the case (Hirschi, T, 2002).
Crime is the act of being illegal.
Law enforcement officials process crime scenes without technological advancements by
using manual techniques like inspection and looking into the details very carefully. They also
conduct an interrogation session of the people present at the crime scene and thus are able to
gather sufficient information to form the basis of further investigation and processes of
surveillance. The initial processing of crime scenes by the law enforcement officials is
usually done without much usage of technological advancements. This is the stage where
criminology theories are vividly used in order to understand the risk involved as well as the
intensity of the crime.
Alan Collinson is the virtual offender chosen. The sentence chosen is that the offender was
found guilty of juvenile addiction and criminal behaviour. The reason for this sentence has
been that it was found that Alan had committed a series of crimes due to social pressures of
status. The strain theory states that he social structures in the society may pressurize people to
commit crimes (Cohen, A, 1965). The social structure or the social hierarchy to which a
person or an individual belongs does have a great impact on his way of thought as well as
way of life. If a threat to lifestyle is seen it may result in committing a crime. This clearly
shows the basis for declaration of delinquency in case of Alan. In this way it becomes
possible to understand that Alan was facing a lot of issues due to social pressures which led
to formation of the series of crimes committed by him (Dubin, R, 1959).
Summarization of the sentence given by the Judge
The judges did give several sentences and differed opinions. It shows that there are different
social theories which impact the final sentence. The sentence of punishment or rehabilitation
may vary on the beliefs of the judges and hence risk prevails in criminology as there would
not be an objective view point towards the final decision. Crimes are detrimental to the
society as they disrupt peace and cause activities like the high society people indulging in
crime though they have luxuries in life just to maintain status which is not easy. It requires a
Crime
lot of money and this pressure does lead to people committing crimes It is quite possible that
there be several chances where in the opinions of the judges differ based on rehabilitation and
punishment and the same has been the case in this instance of Alan Collinson. On the other
hand The differential association theory states that motives for crime and techniques for
crime are learnt from others (Agnew, R., 1992). Association with criminals can lead to
criminal behavior Juvenile Delinquency and the following crimes were debated over and the
arguments of the attorneys varied from there being a chance for rehabilitation or to choose
punishment since several crimes were committed. In this way theories and difference of
opinions resulted in several ways of opinion and verdict derivation (Hirschi, T, 2002).
Application of the arguments presented by Kemshall, Hannah Moffar and Worrall and Hoy
for risk assessment
The arguments presented by Kemshall, Hannah Moffar and Worrall and Hoy for risk
assessment vary on the basis of the techniques for risk assessment and risk management
suggested by each of these theorists. Kemshall and Hannah Moffar explain that risk
assessment is basically a process where in several risk techniques are used to measure risk
and assess its intensity. On the other hand Worrall and Hoy vary in opinion for risk
assessment as they suggest that in case of criminology it is essential that we consider social
causes, and other factors that are present in relation to crime and the offender. Only then it
would be possible to understand the crime from a holistic perspective (Agnew, R., 1999).
Based on these theories, in case of Alan Collinson the main risk assessment techniques...
