This workshop exercise can be used individually. This workshop exercise can be used for knowledge and skill development and may be incorporated into the assessment for this unit.



Task


Based on an individual company (or a SBU – Strategic Business Unit) of your choice (as as directed by your lecturer) you are to apply the Value Chain framework.


The exercise is designed to develop skills in applying the framework – not you becoming an instant expert.


Clearly you do not have access to all the key information that allows you to do this in detail. But

are equally important –especially for this exercise.


There are five (5) key questions to do.



1.
Consider
the relative importance of each of the activity areasin the value chain i.e. in generating value to the company and customer. Remember not every company has to do all activities and the relative importance of each activity will differ between companies.




You might use a 1-10 scale to assign the relative priority – or even a more simple HIGH/MEDIUM/LOW scale.





2.
You are to estimate the
relative strength or weakness of each activity area. This is really using the value chain as part of a company resource/capability and competency analysis.
Again – you might use a 1-10 scale to assign the relative priority – or even a more simple HIGH/MEDIUM/LOW scale.



3.
Companies often need to identify areas to REDUCE COST – especially if the company has adopted a cost advantage strategy.
You are to
identify areas within each activity area
that you think the company may be able to
lower cost. But remember a decision to reduce cost in an area must also consider the relative importance of each activity area to overall company performance.



You should list areas of potential cost reduction and ways the company might do this.





4.
An alternative company strategy is DIFFERENTIATION.

5.
The value chain can also be used to identify potential areas of business improvement - BY BETTER LINKING core business activities. It may be by better linking Purchasing with Operations a firm might have greater efficiency (guaranteed component supply) and maybe lower cost.

Relative Importance of Each Activity to the Company
Inbound Logistics
Inbound logistics is a component of the valu
e chain framework that involves planning for course development. Course developments include curriculum planning, learning content management system, learning management systems, receiving, storing and disseminating relevant inputs for the company. It also involves inventory and warehousing control (Elloumi, n.d, p. 14-15). Optus is a private company that has implemented the inbound logistic component of the value chain in its business operation by diversifying its range of communication services in the warehouse and inventory department. The company provides communication services such as mobiles, national and long-distance services, internet and satellite services, local and international telephony, subscription TV, and business network services. Additionally, the company has service bundles and premium products in its inventory that it provides to its customers (“Customer Success Story: Singtel Optus,” 2011, p. 1).
Operations
Operations are a component of the chain value in which a company’s inputs are transformed into final products or services. Operations also involve the real process of course development, which includes multimedia creation, investment, and acquisitions. The operations system schedules production in a manner that guarantees timely and effective product delivery to customers (“The Value Chain,” 2011, p. 2). Optus Company is one of the private leading companies in Australia that have utilised the operations component to steer their business to the top. The company has made several investments, which include the U900 spectrum migration program that has upgraded more than 1000 sites. The investments have improved indoor coverage of 3G across Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Darwin. Additionally, the 4G mobile broadband service launched by the company provides communication services to customers in Newcastle, Perth and Sydney (SingTel, n.d).
Outbound Logistics
Outbound logistics involves the process of collecting, storing and distributing a company’s products to buyers or customers (“The Value Chain,” 2011, p. 2). This component of the value chain framework is important to the company since it has enabled Optus sign a five-year contract with NSW Education Department, which has enhanced the company’s collection, storage and delivery of satellite services to distant learning students in remote areas of Australia. In addition, using this component, the company also signed a long-term contract with Sky Racing, which has improved the delivery of satellite broadcast distributions services to its customers (SingTel, n.d).
Marketing and Sales
Marketing and sales is a component of the value chain that provides a company with means and incentives that allows customers or buyers to purchase products from the company. (Elloumi, n.d, p.15). This component is important to Optus company since it has enabled it appoint John Paitaridis as the Managing Director of the company. Mr. Paitaridis is responsible for the company’s enterprise, government and corporate business as well as all aspects of sales, product and marketing divisions. The managing director keeps strong records of accomplishment in marketing and sales divisions, which are then compiled at the end of each financial year to determine revenue growth for the company. Some of the products marketed include ICT solutions, differentiated services and products such as data networking, cloud computing, enterprise and mobility collaboration (“Optus Business ups the ante in enterprise ICT market...,” 2012).
Service
A company provides services to maintain or enhance the value of a products or services offered in relation to the value chain.
