Comparative Overview of Labeling Theory and Trait Theory in Interpreting Prostitution
Introduction
    Social conflicts are sometimes driven from the inherent issues in societies that lead people to commit crimes. However, there are some social issues that have been accepted as based on gender and profession assigned to them. Prostitution is one of such issues that societies across globe have dealt with over centuries (Plummer, 2015). In some of the societies, it is legally accepted way of earning but in some other, sex workers are seen illegally working and existing in the civilized society. Several social theories explain the causes and sources of prostitution. The best definitions and interpretations of the same can be found in labeling theory as well as in trait theory. Out of the two mentioned above, labeling theory explains prostitution more than trait theory because it connects social responses to crimes with the concept of deviance while trait theory analyzes the inherent attributes of individuals that encourage them to support, involve or carry out the gender based philosophies of prostitution.
Labeling Theory and Prostitution
    At first, it is significant to note here that sociological responses towards perceiving prostitution are multidimensional; people apply social theories of earning, financial crisis held at families which enforce females to enter in sex working as prostitutes as well as the responses that are labeled over females about their gender i.e. prostitution is related to female gender only and it is in their right to earn their living by prostituting. However, these definitions keep changing when the question of prostitution is addressed as crime. The limitations of this crime are not associated with the social causes only; at times, they are religious ones as well (Plummer, 2015).
