Compare and contrast labeling theory with control theory. Which theory do you think better explains high recidivism rates among convicted criminals? Explain why and support your assertion with concrete examples.


The length of the essay should be no less than3 full pages(ignore the text in the original syllabus, new minimum is 3 full pages) and cannot be longer than 5 full pages. Introduction
    Labeling theory suggests that deviant behaviour roots to various causes and conditions but once an individual is labeled, he/she may face new issues from the reactions and societal stigma. Control theory focusses on controls and strong bonds that are placed tightly in the society that may limit deviant conduct in an individual. But once an individual is prosecuted, he/she is tagged as offenders by the community. This may instigate criminal behaviour and strengthen the urge to involve in criminal activities repeatedly. High recidivism rates have a strong linkage to this phenomenon that results in divergent conduct.

    Becker developed labelling theory in the year 1963. It states that the way a human being behaves is significantly influenced by the way people in the community label them. This explains deviant criminal behaviour as well. People who are labelled as criminals by society are more likely to conduct criminal activities. The sociology of crime relates to this theory as it can lead to the aberrant behavior of an individual (Bernbug, 2019). Influential people and the state generate crime by tagging someone’s conduct as unlawful. The individual starts accepting this label as his/her identity. This theory states that no one is born as an offender but becomes one because of many reasons.
