Communities of color are typically lacking in adequate services that meet the needs of individuals on probation or parole in that community. Thus, these persons are more likely to be returned to custody or have their supervisory period extended. This dynamic alone perpetuates racial and ethnic disparities in corrections. Correctional agencies need to partner with local service providers, faithbased organizations, civic organizations, and social service agencies in communities of color to foster culturally appropriate services and other supports. These working relationships give corrections officers and the court a broader array of responses to violations beyond a return to custody.
