Comments posted in response to articles are often interesting places to see examples of critical reading and evaluation, especially in certain publications like the New York Times. If you can, you may wish to read the comments posted in response to this article on the New York Times site, especially those labeled as “Highlights,” a label indicating that the editors see these remarks as among the most thought provoking of those posted. Some commenters were critical of Dr. SavinWilliams because of the way in which, at least as represented here, he seemed to confuse issues of gender identity and sexual orientation or identity. Why might they make such a claim? Why is keeping complex categories like these distinct especially important when constructing arguments? (Chapter 9 on arguments of definition may prove useful in answering this question.)
