Assignment overview In the first few weeks of this unit, we have been looking at early development and the life span perspective. In this assignment, you are going to apply what you have learned, and combine it with the research skills you developed in first-year psychology. You will select a social service program aimed at childhood development, and then review it using your research skills and understanding of developmental psychology. There are a few purposes for this assignment. First, reviewing a social service program will allow you to apply what you have learned thus far to a real-world context, and to explore a few aspects of development in detail. Completing the assignment will also help you understand development research and build on your research skills. If you ever enter private practice, being able to evaluate programs will also allow you to make informed decisions about where to refer clients. Finally, many psychology graduates find work in social services where ongoing program evaluation is part of funding agreements. 2. Summary of program under review: (250 words)
The chosen program for review is Supporting Expecting and Parenting Teens (SEPT) implicated by ‘The Brave’ foundation. Brave foundation is a non-profit Australian charity, which allows parenting teens and expecting teens with referral, resources as well as education opportunities, which facilitate and allow them to live a healthy and happy life as family. Issue of teen parenthood is not limited to young females, rather teen father’s education and employment is equally affected. The Brave SEPT program was launched in July 2018, as a 24-month federal funding program currently under trial for 24 months. Major and vision of this program is to provide and ensure that expecting and parenting teens receive a tailored Pathway Plan, which would be supported by the chief mentor and Brave SEPT mentor.
The pathway plan provided to parenting or expecting teens would allow them to identify their goals, ambitions and follow their aspirations with respect to future study, training or employment programs. This pathway plan is not only effective for expecting or parenting teen but also for their forthcoming child because it helps to contribute towards education as well as employment opportunities for teen parents. ‘Brave Expecting and Parenting Teen Support and Education Working Group and Co-Development Phase with DSS for the TTL trial’ delivered the research report, which was used as basis for the development of this pathway plan. This plan would allow expecting and parenting teen to identify and follow their dreams, goals and ambitions for over a period of 2 years through engagement in employment and training within their own community.
