Case study Two- COVID -19 Police Powers
Critical discussion about increasing police powers using COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has not just threatened people’s health, but, also, people’s civil liberties across the globe. According to
Freedom House, since COVID-19 outbreak, countries around the world are becoming less democratic, as it has caused large number of casualties in terms of lives, economic ruin, and massive unemployment. A disturbing trend noticed throughout the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic is the high aggressive and heavy-handed behaviour of police officials (Lazzaro, 2020).
The general public are been sternly directed to follow instructions in place with the threat of serious repercussions, in case of non-compliance. Around the world, there are numerous reports of people getting arrested, fined and charged with other penalties for being outside, driving alone or any other minor deviations. A video clip has gone quick viral of a Philadelphia man which has been dragged off from a bus by a police officer for not wearing a mask. This violent behaviour and response of police officers can never be considered as appropriate (Gerstmann, 2020).

There is serious need of rethink of powers granted to police officers for dealing with COVID-19 pandemic. The whole set of quarantine rules issued by government officers have given a strong tonne of power to police forces leading them to involve in several contradictory, incomplete and not clearly understood acts and behaviour. For example, a 17 year old learner driver was fined more than $1600 by a police officer of Victoria Police; the learner driver was pulled over by the police force...
