A 1998 study that was later retracted by the publication made the claim that the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination causes autism. However, autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a significant hereditary component that usually manifests before the age of one year, when the MMR vaccination is ordinarily given. MMR vaccination has not been linked to an increased risk of autism among high-risk children whose older siblings already had the condition, according to a number of epidemiologic studies, including one that showed that relationship.
