Choose two poems from the list below and show how each poet handles the same theme by using three or more of the literary devices listed at the end of this document.

THE LITERARY DEVICES
Imagery:
words meant literally and appealing to one or more of the five senses
figurative language:
words NOT meant literally, such as similes, metaphors, personification, and hyperbole
repetition: significant
words or phrases repeated in the poem; the repetition of “I” and “You” don’t count.
Allusions:
references to history, politics, literature, art, music, religion, mythology
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS
· Your 4-5 page paper must be typed, double-spaced, using 10-12 point type, Times New Roman, with 1” margins all around.
· Your heading includes your name, my name, ENGL 102, Essay #1, and the due date.
· This heading goes in the upper left hand corner of your paper.
· After the heading skip two lines and type in a title. Try to be original. The title should be the same size and in the same font as the body of your paper. Don’t use bold type, italics, quotation marks, or underlining.
· Capitalize the first letter of all words in your title except articles and prepositions.
· In the first paragraph identify both poems (put the titles in quotation marks),
both poets (use their full names in this opening) and the common theme.
· Refer to the poet by his or her
last
name after the first time you name him or her.
· If the titles are long, shorten them after the first time you write them
· Say what effect these poems had on you.
· Say what you think the poets intended and if you think they achieved their agendas.
· Identify a minimum of
SIX literary devices
(three
for each poet, from the list below) that these poets use to reveal the theme of each poem.
· Quote from the poems and say how each literary device works for you as a reader and/or how it reveals the theme of the poem.
· Make sure you introduce every quotation, so the reader knows why this quotation is coming – that is, what assertion it is supporting.
· Put the line number(s) in parentheses after each quotation.
· No single quotation should take up more than two lines of your essay.
· Proofread and edit your work. This shows respect for your reader.
· Put a check mark next to each of these bullets points to indicate that you have fulfilled all the requirements.
