Choose ONE of the two cases offered. For your chosen case use your knowledge of the growth and development of a 10yr old child and explain in detail how you use that knowledge to prepare and support the child/family through the patient assessment and insertion of an intravenous cannula. Frame your paper using the clinical reasoning cycle and nursing process.Jack is 10 years old and weighs 37 kg. He lives with his parents, mother Nicole, and father Andrew. Jack has two younger sisters Olivia and Jasmine. Jack has been brought into the Emergency Department by Andrew at 5:50pm. Andrew tells you that Jack and some of his mates were at the local BMX park riding their bikes over the ramps and Jack crashed his bike attempting to jump over a high ramp - he fell on his L arm.You are working with the Triage Nurse today. When the nurse examines Jack he appears to be in considerable pain, he is crying, holding onto a cushion on which he rests his left arm. The elbow looks very swollen in comparison to that of his right side. Jack himself looks pale, shaky and says his whole arm hurts. When asked where it hurts the most he points to his elbow. The triage nurse then attempts to further assess Jack’s arm and moves it a little, he cries out in pain. The triage nurse advises Andrew that depending on the injury, surgery may be a possibility.Issues arising from the case• Initial triage assessment• Assessment and management of pain in children• Neurovascular assessment• The healthy school aged child• Immunisation status• Preparing a child for surgeryLearning objectives• Discuss communication strategies to ensure Jack and his parents are able to voice their needs and concerns and have their biological and psychosocial needs addressed.• Outline growth and development achievements of a school aged child• Demonstrate ability to prioritise initial assessment and nursing management (include normal range of vital signs)• Describe how to use two paediatric pain scales (FLACC and faces) as part of an assessment of pain• Review the pharmacology of analgesics commonly used in children• List non-pharmacological methods of pain relief• Detail how to conduct a neurovascular assessment• Consider key aspects for the preparation of a child (and their family) for surgery
