Choose ONE of the historically disadvantaged groups who have experienced discrimination discussed in your textbook on pp. 145-156. The textbook for this course is
We the People
(12th edition) by Thomas Patterson. Please note that in addition to the more commonly discussed categories of disadvantaged groups, the last three pages of the reading describe ‘other disadvantaged groups’ such as religious minorities, older Americans, people with disabilities, etc. and you may feel free to select one of those as well.

1.

Read:Carefully read the section in the textbook about the current status of the struggle for equality for that group.

2.

Research:Find at least ONE other academically appropriate article or source that ALSO discusses that group’s struggle for equality

3.

Write Paragraph 1:
In your own words, using your textbook’s information AND your second source, summarize the progress that has been made by that group AND the challenges still experienced by that group in the struggle for equal rights and fair treatment in the U.S.  In this paragraph you should strive for a neutral and academically appropriate writing style, allowing the facts to speak for themselves. You shouldCITEyour sources within the text.

Women have made a lot of progress within the workplace. Women are 6 times more likely now to hold an occupation outside of the home than they were 50 years ago. More women than men are receiving higher education and are achieving more academically than their male peers. However, women still struggle for equal representation in government offices. Hillary Clinton was the first woman to be the candidate for a major political party for President in 2016. Women also struggle to get past the glass ceiling in their places of employment. Although, they overachieve in academics women are less likely to be in higher-paying positions within their companies. Additionally, women are more likely to be harassed and sexually abused in the workplace.

Human history is long, complicated and unpleasant. Equality has come a long way from the beginning of mankind for the betterment of society. It is a work in progress and society should always be striving for better and more equality. Women received freedom from the societal constructs that kept them in the home and have since risen to the challenge. However, they still have a long way to go to obtain true equality.

The civil rights of Native Americans have come a long way from being displaced from their ancestral country, exploited, and abused (lumenlearning). Though it took far longer than for many other groups that had been dealt inequality, Native Americans were given citizenshipin 1940 with theNationality Act. In 1938, theIndian Reorganization Act was passed by congress, allowing Tribes to self govern and manage their lands. The act also granted funds for starting businesses and to go to university(lumenlearning). Today, many tribe's self-sufficiencyand governmentare protected and enforced by American policies. Income has alsosignificantlyincreased for native Americans.

“How can a nation that claims to uphold the principle of equality have barred the Chinese, enslaved the blacks, declared wives to be the ‘property’ of their husbands, and stolen Indian lands”. This quote is very broad and, in my opinion, does not represent the individual strugglesof each group, but rather the whole of American issues with civil rights. While there were far more injustices than the just the stealing of land, this was the event that allowed for other injustices such as exploitation and abuse. The history of deprivingNative Americanscitizenship deprived them of democraticideals.
