1. Background of the Environmental Health Challenge
· Air pollution is a severe environmental health issue
· It is caused by mixture of gasses and particles (Hoq, Alam & Amin, 2019)
· Common pollutants- carbon dioxide, smoke, soot, Sulphur dioxide, methane, carbon monoxide
One of the biggest environmental challenge is pollution. There are many types of pollution but air pollution has raised the significant amount of the concern as world has reached in situation where people are unable to breathe because of air pollution. As noted by Hoq, Alam and Amin (2019), air pollution can be defined as mixture of particles and gases, which reached the alarming level to make it difficult for humans to live peacefully.
· Short-term impact of air pollution includes sneezing, eye irritation, coughing and headaches
· Triggered asthma, COPD and emphysema
· Global warming and climate change is occurred
As suggested by Zhang, Wang, Hu, Ying and Hu (2015), some of the pollutants responsible for air pollution are soot, smoke, methane, pollen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, Sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and moulds. Air pollution has hazardous impact on the health like coughing, sneezing, eye irritation and headaches. As noted by Knippertz et al. (2015), it can trigger severe disease also such as asthma, emphysema, lung cancer and COPD. Air pollution is also responsible for global warming and climate change.
2. Global Response to the Problem
· Treaties are signed by world to control harmful gases mainly carbon dioxide
· Kyoto protocol and Paris agreement to collaborate world in handling the issue
· Environmental laws are enacted like Clean air act of 1972 in New Zealand
The main concerned of air pollution at local level is health issues but globally, climate change and global warming. The main culprit whose emission on large scale becomes the root for all the problems is carbon dioxide (UN, 2018). At global level, the Kyoto protocol and Paris agreements, all are the treaties signed by the world leaders to control the emission of greenhouse and promise to contribute in improving the environmental health. As suggested by Almer and Winkler (2017), Kyoto protocol implemented the objective of UNFCCC to reduce the global warming by controlling greenhouse gases.
· Air quality monitors are set-up
· NGOs are formed to contribute such as Sierra club and clean air task force
As mentioned by Bodansky (2016), Paris agreement deals with greenhouse gas emission mitigation, adaptation...
