Cultural awareness is the sense of similarities and dissimilarities that exists between more than one cultures. Which aspect of sensitivity is used as effective communication within the members of the cultural groups that helps us to understand the different values that shape the diverse cultural backgrounds. It is all about recognizing and understanding the different ethical and moral in different cultures.
Cultural safety is the action of recognizing respecting and nurturing the cultural identity of an individual and safely meeting the needs expectations and rights of the individuals belonging to different cultures (Gopalkrishnan, 2018). It involves working from the cultural perspective of another individual and not from the very own perspective which helps to grow a sound cultural diversity in a given group of individuals.
Cultural competence is the aspect of becoming aware of the cultural differences that exist. Also contemplates the issue of appreciating and understanding those differences and enthusiastically accepting them. It also includes the aspect of being prepared to guard against accepting the very own behaviors, beliefs, and actions as norms to the other individuals.
Question 1B
The cultural and social values that have been implicated in me according to the norms of the culture are:
1. Respecting the elders and being generous to them.
2. Acquiring education and pursuing technical knowledge with computer literacy.
3. Universalism is a cultural and social value that is mainly focused on the preference of applying similar standards to everyone.
4. Cooperating with the other members within a group is also a cultural and social value that I have required according to which I prefer to achieve results collaboratively.
Biases
1. The aspect of universalism as a cultural and social value can lead to biasness because it applies to focus on the preference of applying similar standards to everyone. But within the workforce, every individual is different, and therefore it is effective to apply different standards to different individuals. This is a bias that can effectively influence our behavior in the workplace (Kenawy & Elkadi, 2021).
2. The aspect of respecting and being generous to the elders can also serve as a bias that can emerge to influence our thinking or the work role.
Question 1C
To promote cultural awareness, cultural safety, and cultural competence the following steps can be taken;
1. It is evident to make a word about expanding the knowledge about cultural competence among the individuals and various dimensions of the traditions that are processed within the organization. Besides the organization must make commitments to develop explanations of various cultural groups within the communities served by the agency.
2. Including the principal within the strategic planning and policy development programs that will be designed to increase the individual understanding of the various dimension of the culture and traditions which impact the families of the staff working in the agency (Sharples & Blair, 2021).
3. Creating a safe secure and supportive environment where individuals can explore and develop an understanding of all the cultures and creating formal partnerships with the community organizations and encourage the staff to actively engage with the communities and families by developing policies and program design.
4. Engaging with the local communities and recruiting them for positions within the organization and allowing them to vote. They must also include them within the advisory teams and the task forces. It is also evident to encourage and support staff to become involved within the community boards and cultural activities.
5. It is effective to set an example to the tribes and local communities who work with the agency by reflecting the diverse aspects of the population. More significantly it is effective to make sure that the staff should develop an understanding and respect the richness and additional capacity of cultural diversity.
Question 2A
The aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are known as the First Nations people. Their culture varies across different regions within Australia and the community or family groups within the nation. The domination that was inflicted upon them by the Western atrocities inflicted worsening psychological effects on the indigenous people. Four effective policies must be incorporated to recognize the historical and societal aspects of these indigenous people. To support and create a culturally safe environment for these indigenous people following practices can be undertaken:
1. Creating opportunities with the larger availability of services and greater accountability of services with trained indigenous staff.
2. To support decision making it is effective to collaborate with the indigenous peoples for determining their wants and providing them with services by collaborating with the agencies that develop research and assistance programs intended to address the issues of the federal and the state government.
