Case study 1 Darshan, a 20-month-old boy is new to your service. In your daily observations, you notice that he tends to graze and bump other children, as well as the furniture and walls ― more than usual for a toddler. He seems frustrated in trying to communicate with others and does not always seem to recognise you or other children, even when close. You think Darshan may have some issues with his sight. His family are from an Indian background and have limited English skills. Explain the process you would use to ensure Darshan’s wellbeing and inclusion in the activities of the service. Your explanation should cover: · curriculum decisions you would make to support and promote the inclusion and participation of Darshan · how you would show Darshan you believe in his capacity to succeed in all his interactions with others · how you would professionally reflect and develop your own knowledge to find equitable and effective ways to ensure Darshan has opportunities to achieve his learning outcomes · how you would gain the permission of Darshan’s family prior to consulting with others and ensure ongoing communications with his family are culturally and linguistically appropriate. She has been attending your outside school hours care service, located in an inner suburban area, three afternoons per week for the past five weeks. Her mother, Farha, wears a hijab (head covering) and you notice that some children give Farha confused looks when she comes to pick up her daughter. One afternoon, after Farha has picked Adeela up from the service, you overhear a staff member make a derogatory comment about the veil to a fellow staff member. A child nearby hears the comment and says ‘Why does Adeela’s mum wear that?’ To build respect for diversity and Adeela’s and Farha’s home culture within the service, describe what you would do to: · ensure you have the knowledge to sensitively and appropriately address the situation · encourage the children in your care to value and respect diversity · encourage all staff to promote inclusion and appreciate diversity · use this situation as a teachable moment to create a discussion about fairness among the children · encourage Adeela to feel a welcome member of the community · encourage Farha to feel a welcome member of the community.
