The article ‘Cost Leadership for the current challenge’ by Sciff published in Journal of Strategic 
Finance, 2009 brings into picture the concept of cost leadership. The author suggests that it is 
important for the companies to focus on attaining cost leadership so as to attain the competitive 
edge in the global market. With a strong focus on the cost leadership the company will be able to 
have a proactive approach towards different aspects of the business which will help in lowering 
the cost of production and increasing the customer focus on enhancing the market share of the 
company. With a strong focus on different aspects of controlling the cost the companies will not

leadership strategy. Cost leadership is the strategy of achieving an above-average return on 
investment in an industry by means of 'a high relative market share or other efficiency-oriented 
advantages. 
McDonalds believes in innovation and focused on delivering its products at low price to its 
customers. In its advertisement the company focuses on delivering its products to its customers 
at lowest possible prices, with its motive to attract maximum customers it focuses on giving its 
customers value of money. With its tagline I’m Lovin it, it focuses on attracting maximum 
customers. It works on integrated actions which help in producing its goods at the lowest 
possible price with the required quality and value. Its low cost leadership rests on its 
standardized product which it produces and delivers to its customers. It follows several strategies 
so as to achieve low cost product, firstly, through backward integration, McDonalds have started 
with its own production of potatoes so as to lower its cost of products as the main ingredient of 
McDonald’s product is potatoes.
