CAT Practical Assessment Part B Handout-Instructions 2022 Part B - Searching and Accessing the Evidence Purpose of this part of the assignment: 1. To practice good searching strategies 2. Become familiar with major databases 3. Become familiar with literature regarding your research question 4. Discern levels of evidence and accurately identify the type of study Format of your Part B submission Your submission should have these three distinct components. Please refer to examples for formatting 1. Your search strategy • Did you consult a Medical Librarian? (other than the class) • What medical databases/ search engines did you search? • What keywords/phrases were used to begin your lit review? • How did you refine your search strategy to improve relevancy What words in particular did you use to narrow your search? Did you apply PICO for looking for the titles in your articles? 2. Your search outcomes • How many hits did you get with the databases as per your keywords and refinements? • Did refinements help you get more relevant results? Did you uncover more specific medical terminology as you went along? • What limits did you put on your search? Date ranges? different populations? 3. Citation of the evidence • Select at least 5 high level articles that speak to your research question. Consult the hierarchies of evidence for guidance as to which sources you should prefer • Cite them using Vancouver style - This is the agreed upon style of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). Please refer to the Citation Syles link posted in moodle. • Attach a copy of the annotated citations the most appropriate articles have you located in your literature search. Annotated Citations are citations that also include a one paragraph summary of the study, try to identify the type of study, methods and results at a minimum – to include the following information: title, author, publication, publication date and a summarization in your own words. Expectations for the number of articles cited and summarized. For individuals For Partners and Groups 5 articles cited and summarized 2 additional paper for each extra group member https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Wikipedia:Identifying_reliable_sources_(medicine) Prefer higher level articles in your search and summary. Make use of filters to get more relevant results. When finding your articles, make sure than you can access a full publication and not only the abstract. Many articles not immediately available can be requested through a NAIT librarian or via the NAIT library website. If you need further assistance getting full-text please contact your instructor immediately. Do not discard a search result just because you think you can’t get full text. Help in getting this part B done. • Guidance on this activity will be provided by staff at NAIT’s LRC. The librarian can help you if you are having problems • Consult with your instructor, if your search outcomes are too low to be useful. We can review your search strategy and then recommend other databases and keywords if necessary or suggest modifications to your question. Note: Some topics may have limited literature. If you are struggling to find the minimum # of articles above please consult with your instructor about whether you need to broaden your question or whether alternative criteria should apply.
