A 70yr old woman with severe chronic bronchitis suffers a nasty fall and is admitted 24 hours thereafter with pneumonia. The partial pressure of oxygen in her arterial blood is very low and her CO₂
is markedly elevated. She is in a great deal of pain from 2 broken ribs and this is making physiotherapy very difficult. The doctor gives her an injection of Morphine (Broyles et al 2013 p181).
