Case study about Bronwyn who is 16 years old Bronwyn Johnson, a 16 year-old woman presents to a local adolescent clinic for the first time with concerns about a vaginal discharge and irregular menses. She has been sexually active for about two years with ‘quite a few’ partners. She sometimes but not always, asks her partner to use a condom. She has never used any other form of birth control and has not previously consulted a health practitioner for routine women’s health care, screening tests or contraceptive advice. She is concerned that she has contracted a sexually transmitted disease and may be pregnant. Bronwyn has no contact with her parents and says she ‘couch hops’ or lives ‘rough’. Bronwyn smokes about 20-30 cigarettes a day and consumes several alcohol drinks each day. She says that if she is pregnant she is unsure who the father of her baby is but she thinks it is her ‘cousin’ who raped her when she was drunk. Bronwyn says that if she is pregnant she she doesn’t know if she wants to ‘keep’ the baby. Results of the initial evaluation (clinical and laboratory) reveal that Bronwyn has Chlamydia trachomatis, and is about 14 weeks pregnant. Treatment of her infection is initiated. She needs referral for maternity care. Because C. Trachomatis is a notifiable disease it is reported to the public health authorities. question: 1) What help can you offer her regarding her social situation? 2) How will you address the issue of alleged rape? What is the legislation around reporting for domestic violence in your state or territory and what is the process for reporting?
