Case study 5 - Rationale

Summative Sentence:

The production "were you silent or were you silenced," is an excellent performative piece to illustrate community-artist engagement in theatre. This production produced an immersive multimedia performance by combining forum theatre aspects with community-artist collaboration addressed. Providing opportunities for different viewpoints, from observer to performer, to reflect, contribute thoughts and perspectives. In the process educating individuals of the topics not often discussed (Race, feminism, etc).

Circumstances of creation:

  • “Strongly influenced by the ideas of educational theorist Paulo Freire in his 1968 book, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Boal developed a series of theatrical innovations and interventions designed to raise awareness of the causes of oppression, identify key problems facing a given community, seek collective solutions to them, and implement them not only on stage, but in societal and political venues” (McConachie, 2016)

    • Certain forms of structural inequality and injustice have existed for a long time. It is being illustrated and brought to the notice of individuals. We built a show as a collective community that could document some of these structural exploitation and oppressions. Within the context of politics.

    • The class collaboratively and carefully planned script performances showed the relevance of issues such as race in the nature of our culture and in the performance. In doing so, reactions were experienced; thoughts and opinions were formed much like Coudays explanation of the audience reaction (Coudray, 2017)

Purposes:

  • Theatre of the Oppressed's goal is to introduce a theatrical project that is equal parts theater, advocacy, and educational outlet.

It is quite often that Augusto Boal and Paulo Freire have placed opposing demands on the forum. Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed demands a relentless commitment for the truth, that is truth that can be seen and felt. While his notions are more about feelings, ideas, and actions, Freire discusses dignity, coherence, and tolerance to encourage areas including freedom and creativity. One has to be emptied of Power to understand the consciousness and transformation, is a thought forwarded by Freire. Theatre of the oppressed is a pedagogy that helps art transform itself into social change which is indeed different. Freire claims that the dialogic method is the best guide for the learners since it helps in the process of proposing solutions and demanding justice.
Speaking of Justice, it is important to understand that Theatre of the Oppressed is an image-breaking process, a method that hollows the cocoons of privilege and understands oppression through stand-point narrative. Our work as community artists is indeed a reflection of the maturity and rationality of the art that is being encouraged.
