Case
Otitis Media
A 3-year-old girl is brought to the office by her mother reporting that her daughter is complaining of right ear otalgia. She has no significant medical history. The child is not happy to be in the office and is crying. Her mother explains that she developed a “cold” about two days ago with rhinorrhea and has been pulling on her right ear. Her temperature is 37.8° C (100° F), and the rest of the physical examination is completed. On examination the nose is full of thick green mucus, the tympanic membranes are red, and there is evidence of fluid in the middle ear. Treatment with antibiotics is recommended.
