Carr returns again and again to ways the Internet is reducing our ability to sustain concentration and focus for an extended period of time. He reports that he and his friends “have to fight to stay focused on long pieces of writing” (par. 5), cites a study about “power browsing” (par. 7), and states that “[t]he last thing these companies [Google and others] want is to encourage leisurely reading or slow, concentrated thought” (par. 21). How does Carr support his contention that we lose something valuable if we lose sustained concentration?
