Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. You have been invited by your local community health department to give a PowerPoint presentation on cancers. Your goal is to educate your audience about the definition of cancer, the causes, means for early detection and preventative measures. The meeting will take place at the health department during a community health fair. Be mindful that your target audience will be composed of people from the local community who most likely will not have a background in science or medicine.

Your assignment will be to pick one type of cancer and discuss each of the following:

  • Introduction to cancers.

  • Describe to the audience the characteristics of a cancer cell.

  • What mechanisms does our body have in place to protect us and avoid the development of cancer?

  • Indicate which cancer is the focus of your presentation.

  • Identify which tissues and/or organs in the human body are affected by this cancer.

  • The incidence rate of this type of cancer.

  • Typical age of onset for this type of cancer.

  • Explain the risk factors and/or causes of this cancer.

  • How this cancer is detected and diagnosed.

  • Pictures and/or illustrations of cancer cells.

  • The risk of metastasis for this cancer.

  • How this cancer is treated including the long-term prognosis. What are the survival rates?

  • Measures that people may take to prevent this cancer both medical and holistic.

  • Reference page including citations in standard APA format.

Your PowerPoint presentation should be written with your audience in mind. Remember, your audience does not have a science or medical background, so you will need to translate any “jargon” into something that they will understand.

You must write your “script” of what you will say to your audience in the notes section of each PowerPoint slide. Each slide will have a picture and/or bullet points, along with your notes located in the notes section below the slide, with the specific talking points you will deliver to the audience.

The presentation should be between 10–15 slides, not including the title and references slides.

Creating an Effective PowerPoint Presentation

An effective PowerPoint presentation will include:

  • Have approximately 10–15 slides

  • An introduction (1-2 slides): bulleted list of background and key points

  • A body: multiple slides (10-11 slides), each with one key point

  • A conclusion (1 slide): bulleted list of major points

  • A reference slide in APA

  • Include in-text citations (in APA) where applicable,

  • Use images (with citations),

  • Ensure that slides are brief and bulleted, and

  • Include speaker notes below each respective slide, outlining exactly what you would say to an audience as you presented it.

Introduction
· Cancer is one of deadliest groups of life threating diseases.
· Global burden for cancer is reported to be 18.1 million new cases in 2018.
· 1 in 5 men and 1 in 6 women suffer from cancer during their lifetime.
· 1 in 8 men and 1 in 11 women die from cancer every year.
Cancer is considered as a group of diseases where one or more cells starts growing abnormally and develop the potential to spread or invade other body parts; therefore, depending upon this invasion cancers can be of different types. It would be essential to understand that the prevalence as well as death rate of cancer is much higher than any other disease in this world. This presentation would tend to discuss some of the common characteristics of cancer. Further, efforts would be made to emphasize upon a specific type of cancer along with its prevalence rate, diagnosis, detection and measures to prevent its development.
Characteristics of a Cancer Cell
· A normal cell can develop into cancerous cell.
· Cancer cells can grow and divide at abnormal and rapid rate leading to non-stop cell division.
· This progressive cell division leads to formation of tumors (mass of cells).
· Tumors can develop into malignant tumors, which spread to other body parts.
It would be essential to consider that external as well as internal factors can lead to cell abnormalities because of which, normal cells lose their ability to control cell division. Therefore, they are called cancerous cells because they continue to divide and lead to formation of tumors (cell mass accumulated at a particular site). These tumors can either stay at one location within the body or they can become malignant that is they can spread to other body parts and lead to tumor formation at those sites also and this process is known as ‘metastasis’ (Liu, Lu, Zhou, Zheng & Li, 2016).
Body’s Mechanism to Protect and Avoid Cancer Development
· Human body possesses the ability to protect us against cancer.
· Immune system has the ability to detect and eliminate cancerous cells.
· Human cells possess cell medicated as well as humoral responses to prevent against cancerous cells.
The body’s immune system kills and eradicates numerous pathogenic cells and cancerous cells are no exception. Cell mediated immune systems allow body cells to prevent them from developing into cancerous cells. Apoptosis is one such process where cell undergo programmed cell death if they start functioning abnormally. Natural killer cells and macrophages are specialized cells, which can digest body cells that might be functioning abnormally. Likewise, CD4+ helper T cells, CD8+ killer T cells, dendritic cells, cytotoxins, lymphocytes and much more are all part of body’s defense system, which helps to protect and prevent cancer development (Mironczuk-Chodakowska, Witkowska & Zujko, 2018).
