Broth vs. Semi-solid medium

Broth may be defined
as; a liquid mixture of variable composition. For instance; agar
broth consists of agar that might be derived from seaweed. Agar is made up by numerous
nutrients which may permit growth of few microbes but, to promote the growth of other
microbes such as; certain bacteria, there may be need to add other nutrients in it. (Welch et al.
1991)
For example; addition of milk protein should be done to encourage the growth of
Lactobacillus. On the other hand, salt etc. inhibitors can be added to find out bacteria that may
reflect resistance towards such inhibitors.
Such growth promotion activity might be performed in broth as well as semi solid
medium while, for the purpose of isolation of particular type of microbe...
