Business Start-up Pitch suggested content Introduction A brief overview of the business concept you have chosen. · Your name and role · Business Name · Location for the business · Business vision, mission and values Body (suggestions for content only – how you structure this is up to you!) This is your opportunity to pitch the business! · Explain the product or service you will sell · External environmental factors: Discuss relevant (not all!) external environmental factors and how they might influence your market – or more importantly – how you will manage them! (i.e. Outline the market your business will be targeting for example the target customer demographics, market (location) area, anything else in the external environment you need to consider) · Internal environmental factors: Outline the management / leadership approach you feel would suit the business and why; discuss an appropriate business structure and any human resource management issues (e.g. learning organisation, group/teamwork, job design, staffing, skills, training, performance management, motivation, managing change etc.) you’d like to incorporate into your business. · Sustainable business practices: Briefly outline any sustainable business practices or issues you need to consider if entering into your particular industry (for example, if you are a café you now need to consider biodegradable or recyclable containers) · Ethical business practices: Briefly outline any ethical issues you need to consider if entering into your particular industry (for example, if you are a café, sourcing ethically-sourced coffee beans i.e. fairtrade certified) · If you feel comfortable (i.e. this is optional!) briefly outline the anticipated business growth over the next three years… this is for FUN only (not assessed) and gives you an opportunity to have a crack at what would normally be part of a real business pitch. Think about turnover, profit, cash flow and consider outlining what you WANT from your investor… where do they fit in? . [I encourage students to have a go at this… just one slide would suffice. It will get your creative juices flowing and might generate some interesting conversations over dinner with your family or flatmates!] Conclusion This is your opportunity to bring your business idea home! · Choose your words carefully for your conclusion. Make sure you deliver a confident, informed summary of the key points from your presentation – and leave the investor wanting to know more and knowing HOW they can find out more! Reference List · Include a complete list of academic resources cited throughout the notes pages of your presentation. Note: this is a Reference List, not a Bibliography. ONLY in-text citations should be included in the Reference List. · Make sure your Reference List is accurately formatted according to the Harvard Referencing Style Guide (i.e. alphabetical by surname of authors, titles of books and journal articles italicised etc. See the USC Library web page for guidance.) · You must use quality academic resources to support your presentation content and reference these accurately throughout your notes (i.e. accurate in-text citations in notes pages!). · You should utilise at least 5 quality academic references for this task (a combination of academic journal articles mainly, and some text books where preferred). Other Tips for Formatting PowerPoint Slides & Presenting · Don’t have too many slides · Don’t have too many words on your slides · Make your slides professional and supportive of your key points about the business · Think about how you can ‘visually’ represent your points (pictures are powerful conveyors of messages!) · Don’t write a script and read from it… try to be more ‘spontaneous’ in your delivery! Be brave, know your content and talk ‘to’ your slides and the investor (rather than read!). · KNOW YOUR WORK! Use the slides to prompt you and support your key points · Deliver a ‘conversational’ presentation that is passionate and confident (this takes practice and familiarity! Don’t leave your presentation preparation until the last minute!) · Use accurate Harvard referencing throughout your notes pages (i.e. in-text citations). This also applies for your Reference List – which should be your final slide. · Be sure to edit your slides thoroughly for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors (Hint: ask someone else to view your slides to highlight any errors) Useful Resources and tips · Your Marking Rubric (see section below) should be one of the KEY RESOURCES you refer to as you prepare your presentation and slides. Please keep your marking rubric close by as you prepare your presentation. · Refer to your workshop materials for useful resources in how to present · Knowledge about topics in Weeks’ 1-12 of the course will assist you once you’ve decided on your business concept. You don’t need to cover all topics – just what’s most relevant and interesting for your business concept. This knowledge comes from online learning materials, workshop content and your textbook readings but you must build on this knowledge by conducting your own quality academic research utilising academic journal articles and texts to support your PowerPoint notes · The library has an excellent guide to referencing using the Harvard system. Visit this page to access the Harvard Quick Guide and other useful information about referencing. We also covered important key points about Harvard referencing in our workshops and the Task 1 Information Session. · The library’s ‘Discover’ search engine is a good resource for your business case research. · Google Scholar is an excellent way to search for academic resources (Hint: In the hamburger icon top left, select ‘settings’ then ‘Library links’ and search for ‘University of the Sunshine Coast’ in the search engine. You can then select our University and when you search for articles it will show you if the full article is available through USC’s library. · Your workshop facilitator is an excellent resource and always happy to answer your questions – whatever they may be! How do I choose a business concept? · What interests you? Who are some of your favourite businesses to interact with? (gym / café / hairdresser / Netflix / take-away / gas company WHO KNOWS?! This is unique to you!). Think about whether you could do better and how you might go about that! Maybe you have a unique way YOU would conduct a similar business? These are all ways to start thinking about a business concept you could propose! · Once you’ve decided which business concept you’d like to run with… it’s time to think about relevant
