California State Univeristy, Sacramento EDUC 10 Essay 3 Fall 2020 Work Life Balance This assignment involves interviewing a professional that works in a health/wellness/helping field whose work life balance you admire and making an argument for the life you would like to lead. I. Interview: A. Select a person to interview such as a doctor, nurse, nutritionist, teacher, marriage family therapist, clergy person, etc. It is okay to interview someone you already know but it should not be someone you know well. (It should not be your parents, aunts, and uncles.) B. Interviews may be done remotely using apps such as Zoom, FaceTime, and Skype. C. Arrange in advance to secure enough time for the interview; time needed is 15 to 20 minutes. D. Prepare your interview questions in advance. E. Before the interview write a list of assumptions you have about this person (career path, educational background, where he/she is from, types of jobs he/she have had in the past, etc.) It is best not share your assumptions with the person you interview. II. Make sure to cover the following points during your interview: A. Educational Background – Degrees and/or Certificates, Undergraduate Degree, Graduates Degree(s) B. Courses they found interesting in their course work C. Courses they found the most challenging D. What types of jobs did the interviewee have while in college or while in training? E. What positions has the interviewee had since they began working in the field? What is their current position? F. What is their philosophy about work life balance? G. Other questions of interest to the interviewer III. Essay Requirements: A. Write a three to four (3 – 4) page paper with at least two references. B. Include the name of the person you interviewed and your interview findings. C. Include a brief overview of your assumptions about the interviewee before the interview. D. Include a discussion of how your assumptions were confirmed and/or challenged. E. What was your overall reaction and feeling after the interview? F. What do you envision your work life balance (work life harmony) to look like when you are 40 years old? Be specific (what will you do for work, how much money will you make, will you have a family, how much free time will you have, how will you spend your free time, etc.) G. Make a valid deductive argument OR make an inductive argument that supports the work life balance you envision. H. Describe how moral reasoning, moral values, and instrumental values influenced your vision of your future life. Include specific moral values and specific instrumental values. IV. Evaluation Criteria for this Assignment: A. Follows APA 6th edition format (This assignment does not require an abstract or an appendix.) B. Essay requirements met (see III above) C. Organization of your essay (introduction, body, conclusion, logical presentation of ideas) D. Quality of writing: spelling, grammar, punctuation The essay is worth 25 points and is due: Friday, December 11 at 11:59 pm
