California History Research Paper Instructions Due Date: Nov. 21 Value: 15% (100 points) Instructions: Your final paper is a research paper which will require a research question (topic) and a thesis statement. Your paper can be analytical (breaks down and evaluates an issue), argumentative (makes a claim about a topic and defends the claim) or expository (presents facts and research on a subject). You are free to choose any topic you wish related to the course material. Here is a list of possible topics:  California Native Americans  Missions  Californios  Politics in Spanish and Mexican California  Gold Rush  California and the Gilded Age  Artist colonies in California  California and the Progressive Era  Labor movements and California  California and the Great Depression  California and the World War Two  Dance Halls and music in California  Counter Culture and California  Women in California  Hollywood and California  California and the Environmental Movement  Civil Rights and California Sources: You are required to have a minimum of five sources for your research paper. You are limited to two sources from the course (textbook and/or primary source document) the other three sources for your paper must come from a source outside the course. A great place to start is the COD library catalog for articles and books on California history, I have also provided links to research pages for California history on Canvas- look under “student resources”. Format: Title Page, five page minimum, plus a sources page, double spaced, 12 point font, 1” margins (total 7 pages). Citations: Citations are required for any material referenced outside of your history textbook. You can use APA , MLA, or Chicago; whichever citation format you are most familiar with.
