CThesis, Outline and References: Option to submit for feedback (no grade) May 20, 2021
Essay Due: May 28, 2021 (10%)
Revision Exercise Due: June 4, 2021 (5%)Choose one of the following topics, based upon essays we have read in class and further research, and write an essay of 1000 to 1500 words (approximately 4 to 6 pages of written text plus a title page and a references page.)1. In “On Seeing And Being Seen,” Alicia Elliot discusses stereotypes in writing and issues of cultural appropriation. Scaachi Koul also touches on cultural traditions and how they are practiced and shared. Using Elliot’s and Koul’s essays as a starting point, add your own perspective on cultural knowledge and ownership, and include one more source.2. In our readings, Durga Chew-Bose writes about how her name impacts her sense of identity and place in the world, and Ivan Coyote writes about how their pronouns and gender have shifted their place in the world. Write an essay about these identity shifts, add your own perspective, and include one more source on issues of identity.3. Both Alicia Elliot and Leslie Jamison explore and question aspects of empathy in their essays. Some have said that reading novels, stories, and essays helps readers develop empathy. Write an essay that starts with Elliot and Jamison’s ideas, adds your own perspective, and includes one more source on the connection between literature and empathy.4. Edith Josie and Laurie Penny both describe individual and cultural responses to times of major change. In “Summer,” Josie describes her community of Old Crow during a time of colonial disruption, while in “Productivity is Not Working,” Penny describes urban millennial journalists responding to COVID-19. Using these two sources plus an additional source, describe how you think the current coronavirus pandemic is affecting or will affect the field of work you are hoping to pursue. What do you think the best and/or worst outcomes could look like, in the field you are wishing to enter?5. Many of the writers whose essays we’ve read in class also use other forms of communication, including social media. Choose one of these writers (Scaachi Koul, Ivan Coyote, Alicia Elliott, Laurie Penny, or Durga Chew-Bose), and then look up some of the writer’s posts on social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. How does the writer’s essay compare to the social media posts by the same author? In a broader sense, how does the medium in which these writers share their ideas influence the messages they share? In addition to the essay and social media posts, please include one more source on mediums of communication or social media. This ESSAY is worth 10% of your final grade.
