    William Faulkner’s short story “A Rose for Emily,” published in 1930, revolves around the life of Miss Emily Grierson, an unsociable and withdrawn spinster of genteel upbringing who becomes the center of her community’s attention. Emily’s aggressive rejection of society, after her father’s demise, is an attempt to thwart the town’s flagrant disregard of her privacy. The townspeople put her on a pedestal owing to her gender and upper-class heritage and feel a sense of ‘hereditary obligation’ (Faulkner 40) towards her: “Alive, Miss Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care” (40). In the minds of the townspeople, she is the upholder of Southern femininity which essentially deprives her of sexual desires and agency.
