Cultural themes in “Lost in translation”
The film “Lost in translation” discusses several cultural
themes of both the western society and the Japanese society. The protagonists of the story, both find themselves in a place that is quite different from their homeland in terms of culture, practice and livelihood. Culture as a theme has been highlighted throughout the movie, even though it doesn’t play a central role to the storyline. Bob, is visiting Japan to film an advertisement on Suntory whisky. During his stay at a hotel, he meets Charlotte who is also staying there, her husband away for a photo-shoot. As the two develop a friendship and possibly more feelings for each other, they come in contact with the Japanese culture which is contrasted against their own.
When Bob is directed to act during the commercial, the passionate directions of the Japanese director are not conveyed to him by the translator who uses words like “Bogie in Casablanca”. The translator might have...
