1) Relationship between sport and Identity:
Sports as such is a huge representation of popularity of a person in terms of passion, love for the nation and sense of competitive spirit. So sport and identity have a very unique relationship for that matter which is very complex and varied. Sport allows the identity of an athlete, formation of identity for a particular sport and also lead to gender, racial or national identity as a whole. Sport as such can create a sense of passion in bo
th the participant and the spectator. Sport forms part of a nations culture and is a positive aspect of our world activities. Sport helps to bind a nation together in a way as soccer is to Europe/ Latin America or may be Cricket in India to Rugby in the United states. Its mutually beneficial for both the participant and spectators because for both nationalism can be shown or expressed in a less aggressive manner as there is a clear differentiation between a winner and a loser. In a global event across the world, in any sport, we have seen the level of pride a participant takes in, and also the spectators of his nation takes while supporting the athlete or the team in the event. Sport is a clear cut way to assert the superiority of your nation over the others. This gives an identity for both the participants and the spectators as a whole in any stage the event is being conducted. The world of sports actually allows us to understand the sensitive issues like racism, sexism and classism.
For a participant having a strong sporting identity leads to high self-belief and confidence, higher motivation levels and disciplined lifestyle and hence give more positive social recognition and awareness. In global events sport participation showcases both individualistic and collective societies. There is always a difference when a sportsman says ‘I am a football player’ and ‘I play Football’. The language that a participant speak actually states the status of their mind in the way they talk and think.
Watching sports events has been dating back to many years of this worlds history.be it the first Olympic games in ancient Greece or as recent as the men’s cricket world cup. Many spectators see it as a matter of pastime, many see it as a pride and identity of the nation or even love for the sport as a whole.it is therefore important to understand the behaviours and personality traits of sports spectators in order to better identify what individual difference factors are associated with this important pastime activity. Many studies and analysis has been conducted on various spectator groups in the world to under their fan behaviour moments and also passion for the nation or even considering the same as a pastime moment.
Thus in a nutshell if we may say sport, identity, participant and spectators go hand in hand and is more like the spokes of a wheel and has a symbiotic relationship among each other. A sport is a national identity and a sportsman its torch bearer in today’s world.
2) Role Played by atmospherics at events:
Atmospherics act as a stimulant or an injection for any sporting event across the world. They are nothing but a value addition to any sporting event. Atmospherics enhance the spectator experience, increase loyalty, impact attitude, consumer choice and impact the purchase behaviour and also to achieve promotional and marketing objectives. Music, fan noise, crowding, stadium or online aesthetics enhance the spectator experience in such events. Atmospherics generally help in uplifting the behaviour of the spectator or the crowd as a whole. That is the reason the sports marketers have embraced the concept as a means of marketing strategy. Therefore, effective manipulation of the sporting atmosphere with traditional and present day online atmospherics in amalgamation with other marketing tactics has the potential to enhance spectator satisfaction and many other positive results. These days’ various studies are also done on sports atmospherics, to understand the same and is even taken up as case studies in various institutions across the world.
Just think of a sporting event where music is played over speakers, lighting extravaganza when the players show up and even the scent of popcorns for that matter, comfort of the seats, temperature of the club houses or even waiting time to enter the ground or the facility play an important role in making the event a success or a failure. In today’s world as internet is the most preferred medium, various online influencing factors, in terms of colour patterns of the websites are also taken into consideration to determine the atmospherics of a sporting event. From a participant or sportsman point of view one needs to stay focused in their primary activity and not get digressed in the pomp and extravaganza of the event as a whole. It requires a process for an individual to learn the art of...
