BUSM3307 Project Management Concepts Assignment 1: Project Charter Description Prepare and submit a project charter for a hypothetical project. Weighting 20% Due date and time As per canvas Submission format One single pdf file submitted using the link on canvas Word/page count Maximum 600 words over pages. This does not include the cover page, table of contents or reference list. Expected time commitment 6 hours. RMIT Cover sheet required No Feedback method Feedback will be provided using Canvas assignment comments and rubric. Assignment aim The aim of this assignment is to assess: • student awareness of canvas and online submissions • Appropriateness of hypothetical project for further development into mini PMP • Student ability to prepare a high level project scope and in doing so they can clearly define the purpose of their project and the intended outcome of completing the project • Student ability to prepare a professional and comprehensive document that would facilitate the initial approve of a project and would represent a project moving from the feasibility phase to the planning phase. Assignment description As an individual you will propose a hypothetical project of your choice. It can be construction related, but could also be from any other domain or industry ie. Environmental management, event management, tourism, IT, sports, business development, arts, or a personal celebration. You are strongly encouraged to write about a project that you would consider fun, and it doesn’t have to be realistic (some of the best student project charters have been about things like settling Mars or building a laser on the moon!). A project charter is a document produced during the feasibility stage of a project. It serves to get formal approval for a project to continue, and to commit resources, such as people and funding, to the project. If you base your charter on a real world project then it should NOT be presented as a historical case study. Rather, you should pretend you are the project manager on the first day of the project. This assessment is not an analysis of what a real world project team did (or didn’t do), but rather lets you plan out what you would do as a project manager for a new project. But please note that a 100% made-up hypothetical project is perfectly acceptable to use. Your project charter should include the following 5 sections: 1. Project Purpose 2. High level scope description (Do not include a WBS) 3. Prelim Cost Estimate 4. Prelim Time Estimate and Milestones 5. Stakeholder Identification List Real project charters often include many other sections, but these are on topics that you have not yet covered in the course. If you find project charter templates online, do not follow those templates. Instead, present only the 5 sections listed above. A cover page, which includes things like your (made-up) company name, project name, document name, date and perhaps a nice project image or logo, should be included. A table of contents should also be included. The cover page and table of contents are not included in the 2 pages / 600 word limit. As an example, your whole assignment could be a total of 4 pages, as follows: Page 1 Cover page Page 2 Table of contents Page 3 Charter content Page 4 Charter content . Formatting notes The charter is a professional industry document - as such it is not expected to be 2 pages of text in long paragraphs. There are many templates available on the internet but students are warned not to take a template as 100% correct, each template should be reviewed for its content to check if it includes all requirements and also that it doesn’t add unnecessary sections. Only the 5 sections listed earlier should be included. There are no extra marks given for extra sections. Particular attention should be paid to the use of: • Appropriate graphics and tables • Appropriate use of dot points • Clear, concise and simple language • Consistency throughout each section • Headers and footers • Table of contents which includes page numbers Appendices should not be used in this assignment. Extra pages, such as a 3rd page of charter content, will NOT be marked.
