Here is the assignment
BUIL1237 Building Measurement and Estimating Page 1 BUIL1237 - BUILDING MEASUREMENT AND ESTIMATING Assessment Task 1 - Measurement of substructure Due date Week 6 (Before 11.59pm, Friday, 12 April 2018) Weighting 25% of overall assessment Learning outcomes Apply the measurement rules to measure works that pertain to substructure Introduction The intended learning outcomes of this assessment are as follows. • To apply measurement rules as stipulated in the Australian Standard Methods of Measurement (6th Edition) (ASMM 6) to identify the different elements of substructure. • To take off the quantities of the substructure from Drawings with the consideration of substructure specification notes and the answers give on the discussion board in Canvas. Firstly, you need to read the Drawings provided to identify the different elements of the substructure as stipulated in the Australian Standard Methods of Measurement (6th Edition) (ASMM 6). After identification of various items you need to take off quantities and to complete the measurement in accordance with the ASMM6 on QS papers. Finally, you are required to write descriptions with the use of the Drawings and the specification notes provided. Why measurement of sub-structure is part of the assessment for this course? The substructure can be defined as ‘all work below underside of screed or, where no screed exists, to underside of the lowest floor finishes including damp-proof membrane together with relevant excavation and foundations (including walls of basement designed as retaining walls)’. It is a very important part in building construction for many reasons. Mainly it transfers load of the building evenly to the ground. Therefore, it is important to measure the quantities of the substructure. The quantities of the substructure will be structured in a bill of quantities (BOQ). BOQ is a part of the tender document which is essentially used to cost the construction works. It gives a list of the various components of a building in a logical order. The list gives a detailed description of each component and the quantity of it. The quantities may be measured in number, length, area, volume or weight based on the ASMM6. Taking off quantities of the substructure is an extensive process which requires the completed design and the specification document. The quantities and the descriptions in the BOQ will enable contractors to price the substructure for which they are bidding. Assessment task description Task A: Identify the different elements of the substructure using Australian Standard Methods of Measurement (6th Edition) (ASMM 6) • You are required to identify the different elements of substructure based on the ASMM6 using the classification table • All the identified elements should reflect in the TO list and then should be measured. Note: Please note that the scope for this assignment excludes the ground floor slab and the reinforcement in the strip foundation. file://///rmit.internal/USRHome/eh1/e12781/Work%20at%20PCPM/BUIL1237%20Building%20Measurement%20and%20Estimating/Assignments/MY%20work/canvas https://www.designingbuildings.co.uk/wiki/Screed https://www.designingbuildings.co.uk/wiki/Screed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_contractor BUIL1237 Building Measurement and Estimating Page 2 Task B: Take off quantities for the substructure using the Drawings • As the first step of taking off you are required to calculate appropriate girths for taking off. • Subsequently, you have to take off quantities for each of the items identified in Task A. • While taking off you have to use ASMM6 concurrently to make sure that you are using the measurement rules appropriately. • Some of the measurement rules that you must adhere are as follows, o Use correct unit of measurements based on ASMM6 for each of the items. o Identification of depth categories for trench excavation, girth categories of trees etc. • Finally, you have to make sure that the taken-off quantities are accurate and sufficient to complete the work. Task C: Write comprehensive descriptions for each of the items • While taking off you are required to write comprehensive descriptions for each of the taking of items. • These descriptions should include the kind and quality of materials together with the quotes given in ASMM6. • Further, these descriptions should be clear, concise and should follow an appropriate sequence based on ASMM6. Task D: Use the QS paper appropriately • You have to make sure that all the taken off quantities and descriptions are entered into the QS paper appropriately. • The QS paper should be clean and tidy for checking with sufficient space in between two different items. • As a minimum you have to make sure that the following are done. o Use of correct column for dimensions and descriptions o Enter the quantities in m for taken off items in the dimension column • Finally, you are required to square the quantities for each of the items. Task E: Raise queries if any information is missing on the Drawings or on the Specifications • While taking off it is very common to have unclear or not specified information on the drawings or specifications. In this case use the course discussion board for Assignment 1 in Canvas to raise queries. • You are required to follow the course discussion board although you didn’t ask any query. • The answers given on the course discussion board might be vital to complete the assignment. • Although the discussion board is not marked you are required to mention all the information extracted from the course discussion board in the query sheet • Further, any other assumptions you made while taking off should be entered into the query sheet. • At the end you are required to submit a comprehensive query sheet along with the submission. Task F: Provide a scanned copy of the measurements • You are required to get manual measurements if any dimension is not given on the drawing. In this case you might have to create a scale to get the correct dimension. • Further, you might be using different colour coding to highlight different sections measured. • All these working drawings should be submitted along as a scanned PDF file. https://rmit.instructure.com/courses/50224/discussion_topics/349826 BUIL1237 Building Measurement and Estimating Page 3 The Assessment rubrics This assessment task is an individual assignment.
