Introduction
Sustainability is one of the most important and fundamental part of a
company as the governance practice. This is an opportunity received by the company to come in good terms and have a positive image among its customers and other stakeholders. A sustainability program, which can be integrated in proper manner to manage key social, environmental and economic risks as well as a process of meeting prospects for any new product, services and the markets. In this report the Sustainable policy development of Woolworths, Australia has been prepared along with the process of implementing the policy and assessing the success of the policy.
Assessment Task 1
Part A: Planning Sustainability Policy
Today consumers are becoming more conscious towards the sustainability issue and they are demanding retailers to maintain a steady pace with the changing expectations and needs of the markets. Supported by Ruiz-Real et al. (2019) that sustainability is an essential step which needed to be taken, and the company make sure that customers can able to afford the sustainable products. Similarly, Woolworths is also committed towards sustainability for creating a greener future, which is possible by reduction of food waste, reducing the use of plastic, sustainable sourcing, efficiency in energy and also ensuring activities related to the animal welfare. The sustainability policy of Woolworths is visioned for achievement of its goal by the year 2025.
Sustainability policy of Woolworths has been taken way back in 2007 with the start of The Woolworths Good Business journey programme, which is a formalisation of the sustainability committee (WHL, 2021). The good business journey is the result of the systematic and comprehensive review of the manner in which Woolworths have addressed the issue of sustainable growth. This sustainable policy is inclined by the sustainability agenda in the international retail sector, as well as by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, Australian Business Licence and Information Service (ABLIS) and other legislative requirements. Using the Woolworths Sustainability Index as the strategic framework, which basically tailored to deal with the sustainability issues that may impact Woolworths with over 200 indicators that have been challenging the target of one to five years. These targets are centred to four key indicators, such as accelerating the transformation, driving the social development process, enhancing the environmental focus of the company and addressing the climatic changes that are witnessed for the past few years. As discussed by Grimmer (2019) the first priority in the sustainable development policy of Woolworths is to accelerate the transformation, with the focus on enhancing the skills development, equity ownership plans and also ensuring a healthy collaboration with the suppliers, government agencies and the franchisee, with a vision of Australia first.
Second priority of Woolworths is to work harder in order to focus more on the social development, because the poverty drives the environmental destruction and that will add to more poverty. Naidu & Gasparatos (2018) have further added that there are a number of indigenous people living in Australia, who are living the life of poverty, and they are also suffering from a number of diseases, especially chronic in nature because of the poor lifestyle. In order to alleviate the poverty, Woolworths have expanded the existing initiatives, and make a link with the transformational goals to drive the enterprise towards the development. The third priority is related with the Woolworths impact over the environment, in particular to the diminishing biodiversity. Woolworths is targeting to reduce the consumption of water, because a danger of shortage of water is looming in our near future. A number of programs has been initiated including the environmentally sensitive farming practices throughout their supply chain.
Fourth priority of Woolworths is to address the climate change, and thus they are focused towards in the reduction of the carbon footprint. Woolworths have identified the climatic change as an issue of urgent emergency and it requires immediate action, if the risk will pose a serious damage to the global prosperity and the security will be significantly avoided. Woolworths in their sustainable policy is committed towards reducing the carbon...
