Part 3: Case Study
You have recently opened a coffee shop in a local shopping precinct which has the following businesses:
· Medical Centre
· Chemist
· Liquor store
· Newsagent
· Convenience store
· Take Away/Kebab shop
The precinct services a community base who pop down to the local shops for small bits and pieces, or to visit the medical centre/chemist. The local school is on the next block and parents often stop in on the way to and from dropping off their children at school. You are also opposite the train station which services a large commuter population. You are the only café/coffee shop in the precinct as you took over vacant premises after the previous owners ceased trading.
You are beginning to build a reasonable client base, however, you have noticed the owner of the Take-Away/Kebab shop no longer says hello, or connects with you in any way. The Take-Away/ Kebab shop offers its customers Turkish coffee and specialty baked Turkish treats as well as the usual takeaway fare and Kebabs. The owners feel that you are impacting on their business.
As a new small business owner breaking into a tightknit community, you feel that the situation needs to be discussed to resolve their issues. You have invited them to sit down with you in your café and try to work out the problem so you can both continue to operate successful businesses in the same precinct.
1. Conduct the meeting with the Take-Away owner for your assessor to observe.
2. Discuss the issues each person has
3. Clarify the problems you have identified
4. Discuss and resolve a win/win result
5. On completion of your discussion reflect on your meeting and answer the following questions
Q1. Clearly outline the problem/s identified. List the key points.
Q2. What problem-solving techniques did you use?
Q3. How did you gain and maintain trust?
Q4. How did you demonstrate a high standard of business practice?
Q5. Discuss the negotiation skills you needed to use to ensure you reached a mutually acceptable result.
